{ "p1" : "A satellite image of the Forbidden City launched me on a path of rediscovery of my cultural heritage. The Forbidden City in Beijing has been a political and cultural center of China since the 1400s. The red walls signify privilege and superiority, forbidding common people to peek in. Today's technology, however, deals an irony to bare it all. ", "p2" : "My work asks how the Forbidden City and modern Beijing have been shaped by those people in power. Impelled by William Wiley's paintings and drawings where he used maps, figures, words and symbols together, I too manipulate maps, figures, architectural symbolism, perspectives and events from past and present on one surface. Juxtaposed in my narrative, they create dialogs and tension among themselves, side by side and in layers. Order and chaos ebb and flow in Chinese calligraphy and the dripping of ink. Delving beneath the fake public persona of figures such as Sun Yat-Sen, Dowager Cixi, Mao and Chiang Kai-Shek, my work seeks a deeper understanding of them as people with both strengths and flaws. Truth which they concealed can now be laid bare by historical research. I challenge myself to convey this truth in a visual medium, setting it loose from dusty text.", "p3" : "Born in Taiwan and now an American citizen, my life has come full circle. Chinese history wove a rich tapestry for me to journey on, mirroring the good and bad of humanity. Plowing through the history, I stir up nuances of historical personalities and places that may hold a dialog with our contemporary world. I am in a unique position to create such dialog so that the West may understand the East better. " }
